Central Connecticut's source for authentic Gracie Jiu Jitsu

Not all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools are the same.  Some are very competition oriented.  Some involve wearing a gi, others are solely "no-gi".  Some train MMA fighters, while others focus exclusively on the self-defense aspect and don't include much sparring.  This is perfect, because every student has different needs.

At Gracie Farmington Valley, our program is a mix of self-defense and sport style sparring without a heavy emphasis on tournament competition.  However, we do spar and drill competitively in every single class.  In a system like jiu-jitsu where self-defense is important, sparring is critical.  Luckily, you can spar in jiu-jitsu in every class and not get hurt.  Safety is very important.

We also train in both gi and no-gi grappling.

Prepare yourself for an uncertain world.

An overview of Krav Maga

The name in Hebrew can be translated as “contact combat”. The root word krav (קרב) means “battle” or “combat” and maga (מגע) means “contact”.

Basic principles

Krav Maga encourages students to avoid confrontation. If this is impossible or unsafe, it promotes finishing a fight as quickly as possible. Attacks are aimed at the most vulnerable parts of the body, and training is not limited to techniques that avoid severe injury; some even permanently injure or cause death to the opponent. Drills provide maximum safety to students by the use of protective equipment and the use of reasonable force.
Students learn to defend against all variety of attacks and are taught to counter in the quickest and most efficient way.

Ideas in Krav Maga include:
Counter attacking as soon as possible (or attacking pre-emptively).
Targeting attacks to the body’s most vulnerable points, such as: the eyes, neck/throat, face, solar plexus, groin, ribs, knee, foot, fingers, etc.
Maximum effectiveness and efficiency in order to neutralize the opponent as quickly as possible.
Maintaining awareness of surroundings while dealing with the threat in order to look for escape routes, further attackers, objects that could be used to defend or help attack, and so on.
Training can also cover situational awareness to develop an understanding of one’s surroundings, learning to understand the psychology of a street confrontation, and identifying potential threats before an attack occurs. It may also cover ways to deal with physical and verbal methods to avoid violence whenever possible.

Have you heard of the best way to bully proof your child?

Our Kids Self Defense program incorporates the best of karate and brazilian jiu jitsu. Our younger students (4-7) focus primarily on basic skill development such as following instructions, working cooperatively with partners, punching, and kicking. As they become more familiar with our approach and confident in their abilities we begin to add some introductory jiu jitsu techniques to enable them to become more complete martial artists. Our older kids (7-12) and advanced kid’s classes have a more balanced approach between the different styles and the level of fun and excitement continues to increase as they progress. You may be familiar with Brazilian jiu jitsu as seen in the UFC. For years it has proven one of the most effective fighting styles in combat sports. But did you know it is also an excellent method of self-defense–especially for kids?

The Gracie family, originators of Brazilian jiu jitsu, place a primary focus on protecting against attacks. By preparing the body as well as the mind, even the youngest students can learn to avoid dangerous situations and to protect themselves should the need arise.

This is what we offer for your child: the opportunity to become more confident and to stay safe!
